Summer Reading

I’ve read many good books this last little while, most of them are books written for children. (That’s one of the best things about being a parent. You get to read all this incredible stuff to your kids).

But I want to tell you about two really good ones- the first is a novel called Wild Geese. It’s a Canadian classic by Martha Ostenso written in 1925. I actually read it on my visit to my sister in Arizona; and so I was physically in one landscape- the majestic and solemn reaches of this mysterious land- while at the same time, immersed in the Northern bleak and uncompromising prairies of another.

The story centers on a farming family who are under the thumb of a tyrannical patriarch father-Caleb. Caleb has extraordinary power over both his wife and four children who are now more young adults then they are children. They all react differently to his slave driving and bitter reign. The heroine though, Judith or Jude as they call her, a beautiful strong magnificent woman is particularly rebellious, passionate and determined to break free of her hopeless life of toil and sweat .

With the coming of ‘the teacher’ Lynd, a refined and fresh young woman who is boarding with the family and who is responsible for introducing a glimpse of a milder more kinder world, Jude becomes evermore determined to escape her father’s cruelty.

But there is a very deep dark family secret; even though the children do not know what it is they sense that there father has one over on their mother. And this is how he is able to control them all.

The second book, and this is on a subject that we will be visiting often in the coming months as the temperature rises-is called appropriately Heat. By George Monbiot, radical thinker and writer. This book warns of the already intensifying climate chaos- the floods the droughts, disease, famine, pestilence that is already happening. But the good thing is that he does focus on despair. The book proposes constructive, creative ways to deal with the predicament as a friend of mine calls it- not a problem. There are solutions to problem not to predicaments.

He clearly outlines how we as a nation and individuals can help halt run away climate change. It’s already too late to stop climate change but it’s to too late to do something now before things get to the point that conditions are so bad there is no chance for a life sustaining environment.

Monbiot takes a tough nosed approach insisting that we can reduce our green house gases emissions by 90% by 2030 without loosing al that western civilization has created, if we choose to.

He offers ideas such as carbon rationing; as in war time when food is rationed out, so today how much emissions a person is permitted should be measured out in fairness. If you want to emit more then you’ll have to pay for it. If you use less then your allotted portion then you can sell or trade the left overs. Thus a currency that he calls ice caps as a reminder of why we would be using it in the first place.

On the home efficiency front, if governments mandate efficient building methods, we could prevent billions of tonnes of co2 getting into the atmosphere as well as lots of energy and money in the long run.

Of transportation, Monbiot has ample examples of what an efficient coach system could look like- faster more enjoyable and better than driving in your car going no place fast.

Monbiot urges people to get off their “spreading backsides” and do something. Internet activism is not going to safe our lives. We have to be willing to act- and that means “using our legs.”

There are many things people can do from the very small like not using pesticides, or making less waste to giving up driving or flying to foreign countries for your vacation.

In his introduction he tells Canadians that we’ve been left of the hook and in truth Canadians are in disgrace. We emit 19 tonnes of co2 per person every year. The French emit 6.8 tonnes. The Germans 10.2 tonnes. The British emit 9.5 tonnes and we are just a little better than the Americans and the Australians. We have a moral obligation to the inhabitants of this planet to make amends.

Children do what we grown ups can not do. Children at play (which is their work) burrow in caves. They climb tall trees and high peaks. They twirl and spin around and around, they sink their feet into pools of muddy water, scratch bare knuckle over rough stone, poke fingers into and fill crevices-take chances we wouldn’t dream of.

What are they doing when they stare at a spot cross eyed when they stand on their heads, or roll down a hill? When they throw their voices out across the distances to hear it echo back or walk backwards or with their eyes closed I think they are trying out different angles viewing points. They are seeking different perspectives of looking at the world. They have not yet learned the ‘one way of doing things.’ They are experiencing the world through their wonderful bodies with their entire bodies- while we are capable of only one sense at a time. But our bodies have knowledge- sometimes we know things that comes to us in dreams. I want to do this- I want to use my body like they do.

It’s like eminent scientist Brian Greene of Columbia University wrote in an article for Scientific American “I just think that when it comes to abstract ideas, you need many roads into them. From the scientific point of view, if you stick with one road, I think you really compromise your ability to make a breakthrough. I think that’s really what breakthroughs are about. Everybody is looking at a problem one way, and you come at it from the back. That different way of getting there somehow reveals that the other approach didn’t.” Brian Greene Columbia University physics professor and contributor to string theory author of The Elegant Universe Pulitzer prize 1999.


And yet we keep trying to get kids to do what we think they should do; to learn when and how and what we think they should. Why? What are we afraid of? Our children not getting a good job when they grow up?

If indeed we are shining lights, all with a purpose to our lives as most of the world’s religions and shamanistic practices teach us is so, then how can this become manifest if with our children we are constantly forcing them against their will? Imposing our believes onto them, stopping them from following what they are interested in- “Stop that now. And do what I think you should do.” Become successful as I define success.

My children know beauty and they know that the world is alive. They know that the creatures the plants the minerals of this earth breathe and live and are cognisant. Children communicate with the plants with animals; they see spirits they see little people. Their instincts are in tune; they feel danger. They know joy. They know when things are not right and when they are.

But we in our adult knowledge, we the masters of the world knock it out of them so there remains little fun, little joy, hardly much laughter. Learning is grim and serious, work is separated from play and we play after we work- 'work before pleasure' we are reminded.

But I think we need to learn from the little children because as far as I see it they know a great deal about the good life- respecting the earth and other people- and they are often willing to share with us if we only listen.

If we listen to our thoughts how many of us can claim we set a good example to the children who are watching us? Our thoughts are often negative or boastful or mean. And this unfortunately is reflected in our words and actions. But our children are beautiful before we ruin them. The best we can do is “have them love them and leave them alone”

We have much to learn from the children and from the world of nature around us. As one shaman said; a tree alive has more to teach us then a dead one. All the pages that will be filled with knowledge from that tree are as nothing compared to the actual tree.”


Can trees teach us? South American tribes from the Andes and the Amazon believe that they do - directly. It’s hard for people like us, rational folk to believe such tripe. But wait, is it? How can we be so arrogant that we believe we know all ways of knowing? I feel so angry sometimes that all this knowledge was hidden from me- that all I ever got was the western perspective.

Now I have to dig around to teach myself other people’s perspectives of viewing the world.

This means kids ways too. Why should we consider their ideas to be inferior just because they come from people who are littler than us?

Well, we didn’t make it to the Toronto Small Press Fair this week end; despite the fact that Kitty Corner number 2 and the new zine Curdled Way travelled to Arizona and back ( girls were colouring the cover pages of their zines on the plane). Too crazy busy and we had jet lag too.

My zine (Radio Free School) didn’t even make it to the photo copiers. Apologies to poor Mq who worked hard to get her zine together (World Wide Zine) for the occasion.

I need to find another venue for us.

Interesting development; should children be allowed to vote?

Union for Children’s Rights (UFCR) brainchild of E’s is coming along very well and was the subject of today’s radio show. She’s appointed herself the president and so far has been interviewing children and adults including a local politician down at City Hall. (She was accompanied by her sisters and a friend and we, her parents).

We are looking in to the 'Mayor for a day' program that’s initiated by our local mayor. E has a zine too, and a blog in the works that will display ideas, and goals of UFCR.

M is the reluctant vice-president; Mq takes care of environmental issues. B is in charge of employment concerns!

E is actively recruiting new members.

Mindful Mathematics

Mathematics. You either love it or you hate it- I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t have strong feelings towards it one way or the other. The irony though is that contrary to popular conception, humans are naturally mathematical animals; “We are as a species particularly well oriented for perceptual and physiological reasons to see the world in certain terms and create symbol systems that reflect our insights,” divulges Dr. Bill Higginson, a professor of mathematics education at Queen’s University in Ontario Canada. “And to the extent that we deny and frustrate that we are doing something that is quite unhealthy.”

That mathematics is a source of joy for only a very small percentage of the population might be because most of us have bad experiences with it in school; “it’s pretty rare for a child to go through public education for an extended period of time one year after another and have a positive experience with the subject,” Higginson observes.

No wonder so many people are math phobic! No wonder parents are fearful of transmitting their anxieties over to their kids. But can we change those numbers a bit? Can we teach our children and ourselves to get a better understanding of mathematics and even learn to appreciate it?

Necessary Mathematics

According to Higginson, if there is one thing that we can do to change the situation is to have people who present math to children be positive about it;”this is interesting. This has potential.” Even with some of the children that do very well “we haven’t given them an authentic picture of what math is,” says Higginson. And so they gain a false impression of what mathematics is, unaware that a lot of what they are taught, “is not nearly that important.”

To an environmentally conscious man like Higginson, “moronic” persuasions that “you need to learn math because you don’t want to get ripped of at the supermarket when you go in to buy those doughnuts,” really get’s his goose. Such a response to mathematics is reflective of our consumer, commercial-oriented society and the way we view our world.

But mathematics according to Higginson is essentially about sensitivity to proportion; “the ethical version of that is about justice, balance, understanding the way systems work well enough.”

People who have been well educated in math, Higginson believes, have comprehended that as with it’s foundations and going back to the Greeks, “it’s a sensitivity to balance in it’s many, many manifestations. Fundamentally it’s about rhythms, and understanding connections.”

For Higginson, approaching mathematics education of children is possible from an aesthetic perspective- mathematics as an art; “the idea of fit.” He proposes,”that the world is a set of connections built around relationships of certain sorts.”

Math is one way of understanding relationships. And of course, the environment. Mathematics is a way to understand the limits of the world your in. “You understand the dangers you run in to when you transgress the limits,” reflects Higginson.

Mathematics is everywhere

It was only when I was exploring mathematics with my own daughter that I learned about the Fibonacci number series (and I’ve even taken university math!). I was completely amazed that this number series 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8,13, 21,34....is found in nature; from the petals of a flower, to the swirl of a pine cone or a pineapple, or... a galaxy. The more we hunted in the garden amongst the roses, the black-eyed Susans and the sunflowers, the more we were impressed by this series appearing in nature’s patterns. We immediately wanted to know more about number series.

The ‘doors of perception’ had swung open and what I’d always had an inkling of, became obvious and as clear as 1, 2, 3. Mathematics is everywhere.


Studying art I learned the use of the Golden Section used in Renaissance painting, a sort of ‘divine proportion’ responsible for how, right across cultural boundaries, people define beauty.

Playing the piano, my daughter told me she was doing math; she was encountering fractions; half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes all in musical notation as well as patterns and rhythm.

We started to notice that maths is every where for us to use and discover; estimating, symmetry, proportions, balance, shape, space, logic. From cooking and baking (fractions), quilting and knitting (geometry), building a bookshelf (trigonometry), to balancing your account book (algebra), calculating interests on loans the kids have given me, keeping tabs on basketball scores, and using tessellations (geometry again) in art making.

We pay attention to how our own mathematical problems arise from questions we ask ourselves about aspects of our world. My youngest asks “how many dots do you think are on the ceiling tiles?” She tries to figure out how many turns of her bicycle wheels will cover the area from the front door to the back yard.

Another daughter becomes preoccupied with the shape of black holes, infinity, motion, light, string theory. I can only wonder at where these interests will lead them to.

“The secret to math is finding problems that you want to think about that you find interesting, that you fester on,” approves Higginson, unlike the conventional schooling approach where you try and close them down. “You try in fact to open them up- what would happen if we didn’t look at triangles we looked at squares? What would happen if we didn’t consider it in 2 d but 3 or 4 d?”

As the 16th century polymath Leonardo da Vinci is known to have said, mathematics really is “the language of the universe.”

The Basics

While it is true that "mathematics is no more computation than typing is literature,"(John Allen Paulos) still we know that basics are important to function in the world but we don’t need to sweat it to learn them; there’s a reason why the basics are called basics; because that’s what they are! Most people given time will grasp the concepts with little trouble.

Happily, basics can be learned in ways that don’t involve pencil paper and a work book. And the best part is that parents too can overcome their fears as they join with their kids to explore non traditional ways of gaining the language of mathematics.

Read it!

There’s all sorts of possibilities around mathematical lit that merges language and mathematics; right now there is an explosion of math books that parents can use as a basis for discussion with their children.

In San Diego, one home educating mother of 4 has set up a web site gathering into a compilation an extensive listing of math literature. She’s calls her project ‘Living Math,’ approaching the subject of mathematics from a “human angle,” and from real life situations.

A former CPA, Julie Brennan was searching for ways to “close the gap between math and the various disciplines, the fact that math is taught in an isolated fashion and with no connection to the real world or the human drama,” i.e. with very little context.

She fell on the idea of math in literature, because her oldest love to read so much.

“It’s a jumping off point that might spark of interest- which makes it more exciting. In this way what is happening is that they are ‘grazing on math concepts,” Brennan comments.

As a family Brennan and her children read about Pascal and his famous Triangle and then went off and researched ‘how does this thing work?’ “ It’s much more meaningful and easier to remember.”

Take the Greg Tang books- these are interesting rhymes with matching illustrations to go with them; not necessarily to master the concepts but to prepare the ground work.

“Riddles help you learn to look at objects and find a way from going rote counting to 2, 4 groupings. So it teaches you mathematical thinking and for parents it helps them think mathematically too!” Brennan enthuses.

She believes that the best books are books that they whole family can benefit from. Math curse by Jon Szeska is one of my very favourites Brennan says. No matter their ages each on of her children get something out of that book.”

For older children, the I hate Math and Math for Smarty pants by Marilyn Burns, Theoni Pappas books and The Number Devil by H. M. Enzensberger are more amusing and thoughtful books to sink into.

Learning mathematics from a 'human angle,' such as through history like the Mathematicians are people too series is also helpful. The murderous maths series by Kjartan Poskitt is another great series, that include comics and can be enjoyed by adults too.

Mr. God This is Anna by Fynn, a beautiful tender tale of a child’s mathematical observations along side her adult mentor and friend are also recommended.

In your Face

Brennan has a concept of 'strewing.' Strewing is the practice of leaving math tools and materials such as rulers, compasses, calculators, abacuses within children's reach and not locked up somewhere out of their view. “I use clear plastic containers, rotate them put books on the coffee table.” It’s suggesting without being pushy; “They may or they may not use it and that’s okay. The idea is to find ways to engage them.”

Brennan who has invested in a graphing calculator for her children finds that it gets a lot of mileage for the money, “it has a nice display and they can see the trial of what they’ve input and what comes out.”

Almost all games have a mathematical component;“games are to math what reading is to language,” is Brennan’s opinion so building a games library for the family to use is a good idea.

Games like chutes and ladders, yahtzee, chess, tangrams, puzzles, lego, rubics cubes, backgammon, dominoes, checkers are fun for the whole family. Have a regular game day once a week; “when you sit down with your family to play a game of cards you are developing math skills,” says Brennan.

Again create an environment where a child can go in and choose a game.

Frequenting thrift shops and garage sells is a great way to add to the collection. Have a list of games and math readers handy and then you can recognize them when they come up.

In the world of computer games and dvds, you can pick up good programs such as well as free materials of the internet.

For Brennan, these ideas are akin to keeping a sort of ‘tool kit’ handy for what works and what doesn’t; “experiment with your child,” she suggests.

You can extend the idea of strewing to include talk; become aware of math words that we use such as “I’ll have a quarter of the pie,” or “this building is 100ft tall,” or “we are exactly 10 miles from home.” Don’t be afraid of using words and concepts that you think they won’t get. They’ll catch on soon enough.

Scrap Math

“There’s an enormous amounts of profound math that can come out of very simple materials,” says Higginson, who is a self described “intellectual bag man.”

In our throw away culture there are just tonnes of materials you can pull out of recycling bins that you can use to teach math. For example, with origami, he uses recycled photocopied paper that holds a crease well. Paper folding, a fascinating cultural area “is great fun to do with kids and it raises all kinds of artistic and mathematical questions,” Higginson suggests, referring interested parents and teachers to the exciting work of Erik Demaine where he addresses “profoundly difficult math questions which he interprets through origami, an ancient Japanese art.” (http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/~edemaine/)

Other useful materials include decks of cards, “for all sorts of probability problems,” tooth picks and plasticine, nails, elastic bands and a piece of board to make a geo board and use it to create all sorts of geometric shapes. Soaked peas, marshmallows, that you can build attractive mathematical structures with bread bag tags, counters, buttons, soap bubbles, “build a structure and dip into a soap solution get a surface which because of the way math works happens to have properties of minimality,” Higginson points out.

With mathematics, a “no waste aspect” from an environmental point of view is pretty obvious and can readily be emphasized.

Higginson urges us to look at mathematics as an avenue to reflect deeply on issues of consumerism and commercialism, philosophical spiritual and political issues.

“Math is a gymnasium for the mind,” it is said. And it’s in the reach of all people. “There are some areas that due to socio- economic factors some people have a lot of advantage over others. Maths is not one of these areas,” concludes Higginson.

Groovin' with Gatto

1) Incidental education, taking part in the on-going activities of society, must again be made the chief means of learning and teaching.

2) Most high schools should be eliminated, with other kinds of youth communities taking over their sociable functions.

3) College training should generally follow, rather than precede, entry into the professions

4) The Chief occupation of educators should be to see to it that the activities of society provide incidental education, rather than exploitation or neglect. If necessary, we must invent new useful activities that offer educational opportunities

5) The purpose of elementary pedagogy, through age twelve, should be to delay socialization, to protect children's free growth, since our families and community both pressure them too much and do not attend to them enough. Modern times pollute and waste natural human resources, the growing children, just as they do the land, air and water.

Great Gatto

Great Gatto

John Taylor Gatto is either famous or infamous amongst ‘educators’ of all sorts.

They’ll go nuts for what he’s saying; or they’ll consider him a nut. A dangerous, noxious nut that once ingested spreads poison in the victim. So wicked are his ideas that the police have been brought in to shut down his talk and clear an auditorium of high school students.

So threatening and frightening have been his messages that pre-planned lectures have been cancelled.

Supposedly what he has to say has been found by some to be ‘unfit’ for the tender ears of parents, who like children can’t form their own opinions and have to be told what to think.

Personally, I go nuts. When Carlo Ricci organized to have Gatto come to his Nipissing University class at the Brantford, Ontario campus to give a talk and extended the invitation to the public, I wasn’t about to miss the opportunity to see in the flesh the person I’d interviewed (and who has the most downloads Randy tells me) a few years back.

The talk he gave was every bit as stirring; his entertaining style of delivering, his outrageous anecdotal stories, and his daring, always daring personality rock on. A bit of a rogue, I can’t help thinking of him as original Americana- the trail blazer adventurer, courageous pioneer, Wild West horseback- riding cowboy, shooting his gun off ‘like all get out.’

It’s ‘Truth Justice and the American way’ (to quote from Superman) for all people and for those who don’t like to hear it, that means kids too.

If I could sum up Gatto’s message of the day, it would be; Kids. Carpe Deum.

Take the day. Do the thing. The young are POWERFUL; they have the ability to do GREAT THINGS- I mean really GREAT THINGS.

(And Gatto supplies hefty examples of current kids –that have passed through his hands-and yesteryear kids such as Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Charlie Chaplin, Beatrix Potter, Louis Armstrong, to prove the point).

And they should not wait to do these GREAT THINGS. And we should not try to stop or divert them in artificially extended childhood.

Gatto himself has made it his purpose in life to be that helping catalyst “add value” to their lives and then get out of the way. (He’s been a teacher for over 30 years, and he won New York State best teacher award in 1991. And you know how he got into teaching? Gatto wasn’t embarrassed to tell us that he ‘borrowed’ his roommates teachers licence after his mate quit his one day teaching stint in disgust. Gatto never did say if he ever got his own licence in the end. Some how I doubt it).

In his own words, his work has got “easier and easier” as he becomes better and better at helping kids achieve their goal,"adding value to their lives." Not by testing, grading, cajoling, rewarding, bribing, threatening and all the other methods we think help create distinction in our kids, basically usurping their power- no not that way. But by being a mentor and by putting the power back where it belongs. In their hands.

Wow! I got home and with lots to mull over and my thoughts lead me to contribute this small observation; as adults what do our lives look like? If we don’t do, if we don’t pursue our interests with a passion, if our lives are timid and fearful and shallow, how can we hope to guide our children? Again to borrow from the Greeks then; Physician. Heal thyself.

Falling Behind

Rather than batten down and finish editing this week's show, we piled into my sister's van and drove to Niagara Falls.

The Real World

Monday morning. 8 am. The family is still in bed. I sit at the window and watch the snow fall. I imagine each snowflake- its life. Falling in clumps together with its fellow snowflakes landing in soft fluffy bolls on top of beautiful tree branches, lacing the webbed bushes like tattered bits of cloth, on the fence, and on last summer’s old grass, on the cement walk and on the outdoor toys.

I imagine what it must be like to float down from the sky. The cold air, the white world being created by all the snowflakes together falling in harmony, landing layer upon layer, like humans unto the earth.

I recall a conversation I had with an acquaintance about kids not having time to lounge about in their pyjamas. “But your kids get to do that don’t they? Still. What happens when they have to get up for jobs and things?”

The solid wall of the ‘Real World’ comes up again.

Outside the window, high in the moody sky, grey gulls coast in the wind snow falling around them. I am these gulls all three. I know what it’s like to be in that world.

There are many worlds and none is more real then the other.

Perhaps that homeless man whom we pitied, sitting on a bench out in the cold, bundle buggy holding all his worldly possessions tied up in it; perhaps he has a world to tell us about. His ‘real’ world. Perhaps it is a grim hard sad world filled with people who avoid him or scorn him. But perhaps it is a world of surprises too. Perhaps something real happens to him everyday. Something that makes him genuinely happy or something that makes him feel lucky to be himself.

People say ‘kids must go to school in order to be prepared for the real world.’

I say, we are discovering new worlds everyday. I say we are creating new worlds. People created the so called ‘real world,’ people can invent new ones, different ones.

As to functioning in the regular one, the common one that is only common because people have willed it so; I know that when unschooled children have to get up early for something they have to get to, they do.

Furthermore, the real world that we have accepted as 'boring' and 'difficult' and 'predictable' need not be. Picasso slept all day and painted all night. Braque slept all night and painted all day. They had one bed between them. But what a life they lived!

As Picasso said, “If you know exactly what you are going to do, what’s the good of doing it?” I’m thinking about the element of surprise, of intrigue that I for one can’t live without.

The human creature is a creature of immeasurable adaptability. The human learns. There is nothing to fear because a child sleeps in while his peers shrivel with boredom in school.

I leave you with the question ‘what is real?’

The A-Infos Radio Project was formed in 1996 by grassroots broadcasters, free radio journalists and cyber-activists to provide ourselves with the means to share our radio programs via the Internet. How It Works
